Chicago and STL with DMB

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Sitting here in the airport, waiting for my Southwest flight to begin boarding. We’re in St. Louis, about to fly back to Kansas City. We left on Friday morning around 8am and headed to Chicago. Toyota Park was the venue for my first DMB concert of the year, and it was “off the hook” as the saying goes. One of the best concerts I can ever remember attending. Tim Reynolds is playing with the band this tour and he is an amazing guitar player. This was one of the first shows I have seen where Butch Taylor wasn’t with the band, leaving noone on the keyboards. Butch left the band, though he wasn’t ever officially a member, the week before the 2008 summer tour began. But outside of noticing no keyboards on the stage, he wasn’t to be missed.

Joining the band was Béla Fleck, playing the banjo. He was awesome, playing #41, Don’t Drink the Water, and Cornbread. He came back to close the main set with Ants. It was crazy-awesome. I wish he played with them more. In the encore, the full band played Long Black Veil… a very cool and interesting arrangement. I have never heard it played full-band before. And then, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) was played to close the show. It was amazing. Towards the end, Dave ditched his guitar and sang into the mic, even pulling it from the stand and dancing around the stage. I have never seen him do that before. Truly awesome concert.

The next morning, a quick flight to St. Louis, where we spent the day eating, sipping on some beverages, and then attending the sold out show at Busch Stadium, home of the STL Cardinals. We stayed at the Hilton At The Ballpark, right across the street, which made it convenient. This show, too, rocked. They ended with the same Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) song and Dave went nuts, just like the night before. No special appearances, but some old school Pay For What You Get, Recently and Trippin’ Billies. The show opened with Two Step… the band began playing and singing behind a curtain of video screens that rose partway into the song.

Another great concert… not as great as Chicago, but sitting 12th row from the stage in center field of Busch Stadium was a memorable experience. There was more that happened on this trip, but you have to ask me off-line for details on that!

Well, looks like we’re boarding here. Time to wrap it up. Stoked to go see my dog; stoked for the next DMB concert. This tour has begun in amazing fashion… I am definitely ready for more.

Peace.

DBC, a Saturday Nooner

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

Wide variety of topics, rapid fire style, so here we go:

* Heading to the airport in less than an hour and a half. Flying to Ft. Lauderdale, driving to Miami. Yes, it is the DBC… Day Before Cruise.

* Awesome news… Dave Matthews Band tour dates announced. Very interesting opening acts… not the same ‘ole ones. The Gorge this year will feature O.A.R. (Of A Revolution) — I have really grown to like this band and their music, so I am pumped about that. The Black Crowes are opening several, including St Louis, which is at Busch Stadium. DMB is not coming to Kansas City this year, which is not much of a surprise.

* Time out, Rebecca is taking Hoover and the other dog to the doggy hotel for the week. I need to go say my goodbyes and ask Hoover for forgiveness in advance. I gave him a cup of ice cream, so that should help.

* Okay, Hoover has departed. He was excited. We’ll see how mad he is when we get home in over a week.

* Is it ever a good time to miss work for a week? No matter when you plan a vacation, work will never be satisfied with you being gone. There is so much going on right now, it is hard to miss a week. Especially when I may not have much access to phone or internet.

* I’ll get over it. I am anxious to go… ready for warmth… ready to dive… should be a blast.

* Braelyn is napping right now. She should wake up about time to go to the airport. Her 2nd trip. Let’s hope she is as good on the plane this time as she was to Colorado. Twice as long in the air, but I think it will all be good.

* Few last minute things to get done so I am gonna call it a wrap.

Till next time,

KEEP THE HC OUT OF THE WH

Pullin’ For January 9th

Saturday, January 5th, 2008

I just decided that BGE should be born on the 9th.  While looking at my new Dave Matthews Band calendar, Rebecca noticed that the one and only Dave Matthews has his birthday on January 9th.  How fitting that Braelyn Grace should be born that day… since Grace is actually the name of one of Dave’s daughters.

Time will tell, but I’m now pulling for the 9th.

Almost Like Being There

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

Sitting here in my office at the Dave Matthews Band concert. Thanks, AT&T. I cancelled your phone service today, but you are allowing me to watch the DMB concert live over the web… for free! You rock, AT&T! On a day you lost my MRC of $77, you gave me a free concert. I appreciate it.

Tomorrow, or maybe Saturday, or then again, maybe Sunday, we will venture to Casper W-Y-O for Thanksgiving. Spencer, Hoover, Rebecca and I. I need to figure out how to fit my guitar in the car, too. Had practice tonight and made some good progress. Can’t let it slide for over a week. Problem is the Escalade is gonna be full. Oh well, we’ll see what we do.

After tonight’s concert, it will be off to the gym for my arms workout and some cardio. Yee haw.

Spoke to soon about ATT. Concert froze… but now it’s back on.

Lost 7+ pounds in 3 weeks. Nothing off the waist line though. It’ll come.

Ok, done typing. What Would You Say is now playing.

Peace. Vote Republican.

Back in San Diego

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

My frequent travels have brought me back to the place I had to call “home” for almost seven months last year… San Diego. Gabe and I flew out here Thursday night after spending time in Phoenix working on a lease of a datacenter for work. Thursday night, we had dinner with Mike Howard, our CFO, at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. I have to say, I was again disappointed by RC. Gabe loves the place, and I have had great meals there, but they are not consistently good like Capital Grille. Thursday night I had the strip instead of the filet… and it was good, just not great.

Friday was a day in the San Diego Aplus.Net office. Took a sales manager, office manager, sales trainer and sales engineer to lunch but didn’t really eat much as it was only a few hours after breakfast. We left the office around four to head south to the hotel and ultimately the DMB show at Coors Amphitheater. We left early to miss the traffic.

I did not expect Coors to be a nice venue. It’s in Chula Vista, which is not necessarily the nicest area of San Diego. It’s just north of the US/Mexico border. The venue is out of the town a bit, by a huge waterpark, and as soon as I saw it, I realized my speculation was wrong. In fact, Coors is one of the nicest venues I have been in. It is clean, well landscaped, and HUGE. Things were setting up for a great show.

I tried blogging from my Treo Windows phone, but the browser kept failing on my post, so you missed my live post. I did it right at the end of Steve Marley’s reggae opening act. The act was good, but my head hurt. I did get a lot of enjoyment out of watching the “band memeber” who did nothing but wave a flag for 45 minutes on stage.

Dave came out and the band opened with Granny, which was a pleasant surprise. The setlist contained all the new songs, of course, as well as a mix of some old. And Typical Situation was bizzare… Dave sang for a second, then the band just played without vocals… until the very end. Was odd, but I guess they have done that now 6 times on the tour… this was my first to witness it.

I enjoyed the show but the audience lacked emotion… they sat down a lot. It was just, well, different than normal. Maybe it would have been different if we were down towards the front. We were in section 205, which is extremely stage right, but decent view.

After the show, we came back to the hotel. I took some aspirin and hit the sack.

Now, I should still be in bed, but its 9:38 in Kansas City and my body still thinks I am there. In a few hours we’ll pack up and head for the airport to catch a flight to San Jose. We’ll witness our last DMB concert of the tour in Mountain View at another one of the nicest venues I have ever been to — Shorline Amphitheatre. They only play two more shows after tonight; summer is over! I wonder if they will have a winter tour. Nothing has been released about one yet, but I bet we’ll hear soon.

Hasta, from just north of Mexico.

Just Another Manic Wednesday

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

* This has been one of teh busiest weeks at work in quite a long time. Working on finalizing a data center lease (we’re negotiating the language of two at once, one of which we will sign by the end of this week), working on getting a telephony solution pushed through financing (we’re basically there… another end of the quarter deadline), and normal stuff.

* Off to Phoenix tomorrow at 11:30 am for data center meeting. Then, onto San Diego tomorrow night — estimated time of arrival is 6:30. Dinner with Clarke (SVP, Sales) and Mike Howard (CFO) are both potential occurences; Gabe is my travel partner.

* Meet with our SD staff all day on Friday, then off to a Dave Matthews Band concert Friday night. Should be a good time.

* Saturday, we fly to San Jose. Little work; another concert… last one of the tour we’ll get to attend.

* Summer is… over. Gabe’s pool was COLD tonight. The spaghetti was good (so much better than Rome’s)

* Nick is trying to perfect his Southwest Airlines auto-checkin program he has been writing. He attempted to get Gabe and I checked in, exactly 24 hours in advance of each of our flights. I did it manually; he thinks his system worked; but it’s too hard to decipher. We had multiple passengers and multiple same day flights, so there were a lot of variables. We’ll test a simple one, our San Jose flight, on Friday. His system will virtually guarantee an A boarding pass, thus guaranteeing a window or aisle seat with Southwest’s open seating policy; even with their changes, his system will rock!

* Maybe he will start charging people to use it; but what if too many people subscribe for the same flight; not everyone can be first!

* An out-of-the-blue phone call from Matty Snyder tonight while at the Murphy’s eating. Only talked for a few, but he sent me a long, detailed email about his going-ons over the last year. Congrats to him, he has his second child on the way… this one, a boy! Due in January. Wonder if he planted the seed the same day I did… heh. At least, I hope it was my seed which was planted (and for his sake, his too!)

* My uncle Ron had a heart attack last week; had a stint put in and went home the next day or maybe 2 days after. I hear he is doing well. He’s supposed to fly to Casper from Phoenix for the weekend for Shelli’s folks wedding anniversary (#60 I think) but won’t find out until tomorrow if he get’s to go. I’m just thankful he’s ok. He had the attack at the hospital, thankfully. SHelli took him as he was having pains. What a blessing he was there, with doctors, when it happened.

* I learned of Ron’s scheduled trip to Casper and his doctor appointment from my Grandma, who called me tonight to check in on us all. It is always great to talk to her; she sounded good tonight. She is a special lady. She misses driving (she tells me that every time I talk to her). I can only imagine what it is like to lose the freedom to go where you want, when you want. Part of the cycle of life, I told her. She is excited for our little one, and that we are venturing to Casper for Thanksgiving (Spencer, Rebecca and I in the hummer…. with Hoover). Yes, Hoover will be taking his first road trip, provided I can keep him at my sister’s house or something. Waiting for an invite from mom or Stephanie… someone please!

* Hoover turns 2 on October 4. My puppy is becoming a man! And he is getting thicker. We went for a short run the other night; he beat me. But tonight, he wouldn’t jump in the H2 to go to the Murphys. So, he stayed home.

* Rebecca had a parenting class for teenagers through her friends church. Came home, and her and Spencer started arguing. What a great class! Thankfully, I think it’s free.

* Speaking of Spencer… he just requested my assistance with home work. Social Studies. Great. Please don’t tell him I sucked at that…. burn my old report cards!

*

Buh bye for now; class is in session.

And That Makes Twelve

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

No, not the days of Christmas… the days of DMB concerts at the Gorge I have been to. It all began back in September, 2002. Jason Squires hauled me up to the Gorge… at George… for three nights of DMB concerts. Little did we (or at least I) know, they were filming those three nights and putting out some DVDs and CD sets from the show. Those three nights were simply amazing… despite the fact that Dave’s voice was hoarse (I recall some people complaining that he should have cancelled the shows, but I thought it made the shows so REAL and so RIGHT). The third night that year was amazing. The encore consisted of Dave and Leroi performing Long Black Veil, then Dave, Stefan and Carter with an amazing (and my first) live rendition of Halloween (Carter was off the hook) then Trippin Billies with the whole band. Between Halloween and Trippin Billies, Carter went crazy. Weird, the 2002 shows are still so vivid in my head. Also was sweet that Squires and I stayed at the Best Western in Moses Lake, where the band stayed (well, Dave and Carter didn’t, but everyone else did). We saw Butch, Fonzy, Boyd, and Roi (it was his birthday) drinking in the bar after the show. Was cool… fans gave them there space.

So, three shows in 2002 at the Gorge. In 2004, I ventured back up to the middle of paradise for another three night set. This time, I was going with Gabe but something happened preventing him from going. Lenny and Katy Hihath journyed with me and we had a great time… even sat front row. The set lists don’t stick out in my head like the 2002 did, but it was absolutely wonderful. We had to drive like 70 miles after each night of concerts to get to our hotel (almost to Spokane), which kinda sucked, but the shows were great.

Ok, so 6 shows at the Gorge in 02 and 04. Why not keep the pattern? Yep, in 2006 (last year, duh) Gabe and I went up for the three nights. Shows not as amazing as 02, once again, but were great none the less. This was also the first year I experienced camping at the Gorge Campground. On Friday night, we stayed in that same hotel 70 miles away that Lenny and I stayed two years before. But, instead of making the drive again, we opted to hit up Walmart, buy a tent and some sleeping bags, and rough it. What a blast! We camped on Saturday night, had a great time. Then, Sunday night we drove back to Seattle right after the show so we could catch our early flight to San Diego on Monday.

Alright, so I broke the pattern this year and went to the Gorge in an odd year (07). And I am so glad I did, as it was just So Right! Gabe and I went up again and I saw my 10th, 11th, and 12th shows at the Gorge. Second night we were in 3rd row center… with no one in front of us do to how they lay out the rows. It was SWEET! All three nights we heard the new songs of the tour: #27, Dream So Real, Eh Hee, and Cornbread. While I was not a fan of Dream So Real, it got better each night. I was disappointed they opened both Saturday and Sunday night shows with it. Sunday was better, but the song just isn’t opener quality yet. Cornbread is my favorite of the new songs, but Eh Hee is amazing live, and #27 is catching on big time.

This trip we stayed where the band used to, but apparently doesn’t anymore. And despite looking, we couldn’t find where they stayed. Once we found this out, however, we decided to camp on night two. Luckily, we planned ahead and brought some of the camping gear just in case. We still had to drop a bill or two to get the rest of the camping needs (not convenient having a 2 check bag limit per person so we couldn’t bring it all — however, props to both Midwest Airlines and Frontier as they gave us an extra checked bag without charging us). Grilled some burgers, some filet, played some football, hung out, had some beverages, met some people from around this One Sweet World and had a great time. Third night, drove back to Seattle after the show… arrived at 1:30 Pacific this morning, got a room at the Days Inn by the airport (same !@*#hole as last year, avoid this place) and slept a whole 3 hours before we had to return the rental car and catch our 6:10 am flight back to KC.

Well, of the 12 shows at the Gorge, I loved ‘em all, but none as much as night three of 2002. But each year, new memories, new experiences. I can’t wait to head back up there in 2008 — can’t miss the even years! Oh, and it will be camping the whole time.

So now, I am tired, need some sleep. Just practiced Crash on the guitar, but need to rest so I can make my ops meeting in the morning and my doctor’s appointment at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon. I have a strange feeling today is my last day without meds for high blood pressure. Oh well, if meds will keep me in this life longer, I’m all for it. Then Friday, it’s off to Europe for a week. I love flying [PAUSE] not.

Peace.

Live from The Gorge at George

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

So, woke up about an hour ago here in the middle of beautiful Washington state. Sitting in the hotel room with Gabe, watching CNN reporting that IdaHOE Senator Larry Craig is about to resign.

Last night we attened the first of three DMB concerts out here in paradise. A rather hot day turned cooler making it very comfortable for watching Dave and the Boys jam for a few hours. All four new sings (Ehhee, #27, Cornbread, and a Dream So Real) were played, just like last Tuesday in Kansas City. They opened with a nice rendition of Dreaming Tree. The concert was good, but I expect that tonight and tomorrow will be better. Last night just didn’t (outside of the location) seem to really top the KC show earlier this week. But, I think they will pick it up a notch or two tonight.

We’re about to head over and get some grubb, then we may end up camping tonight instead of coming back here to Moses Lake’s Best Western. Disappointing… the band didn’t stay here this year. The crew is here, but not the band. We’ll set out and find the tour buses and see where they are. I understand a new Holiday Inn opened up, and that’s where we’ll look first. There are only a few choices out here in the middle of nowhere (aka paradise).

More later, hope Rebecca is feeling better. She’s been under the weather with the same crap I had a few weeks ago.

Peace.

New Pictures and Such

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

Ok, quite a few new pictures uploaded this fine evening in the gallery. There are plenty of Spencer’s 14th Birthday (family) party, a few of Hoover, some new Brock playing baseball, maybe a shot or two of Rebecca, and some of the rest of the Murphy clan as well.

Tuesday night is the Dave Matthews Band concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater here in the KC suburbs. Should be a great night. Rebecca and I will be 2nd row center, with Gabe and Stephanie right behind us, Spencer and Michael Murphy right behind them, the Bryan and Erica Heitman the next row. Hopefully there will be more energy than is typical in Kansas City.

Oh, yeah, Tuesday is also the official birthday of Spencer. He will officially be 14.

On Friday, it’s off to Seattle and a drive to the Gorge for 3 nights of DMB concerts in Heaven’s Amphitheater. It is so amazingly awesome up there. Will take my camera this year and get some good shots hopefully.

Of course, the week after it’s off to Rome and Bulgaria.

Well, not in much of a ramblin’ mood tonight. So that’s all.
