Just Another Manic Wednesday

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

* This has been one of teh busiest weeks at work in quite a long time. Working on finalizing a data center lease (we’re negotiating the language of two at once, one of which we will sign by the end of this week), working on getting a telephony solution pushed through financing (we’re basically there… another end of the quarter deadline), and normal stuff.

* Off to Phoenix tomorrow at 11:30 am for data center meeting. Then, onto San Diego tomorrow night — estimated time of arrival is 6:30. Dinner with Clarke (SVP, Sales) and Mike Howard (CFO) are both potential occurences; Gabe is my travel partner.

* Meet with our SD staff all day on Friday, then off to a Dave Matthews Band concert Friday night. Should be a good time.

* Saturday, we fly to San Jose. Little work; another concert… last one of the tour we’ll get to attend.

* Summer is… over. Gabe’s pool was COLD tonight. The spaghetti was good (so much better than Rome’s)

* Nick is trying to perfect his Southwest Airlines auto-checkin program he has been writing. He attempted to get Gabe and I checked in, exactly 24 hours in advance of each of our flights. I did it manually; he thinks his system worked; but it’s too hard to decipher. We had multiple passengers and multiple same day flights, so there were a lot of variables. We’ll test a simple one, our San Jose flight, on Friday. His system will virtually guarantee an A boarding pass, thus guaranteeing a window or aisle seat with Southwest’s open seating policy; even with their changes, his system will rock!

* Maybe he will start charging people to use it; but what if too many people subscribe for the same flight; not everyone can be first!

* An out-of-the-blue phone call from Matty Snyder tonight while at the Murphy’s eating. Only talked for a few, but he sent me a long, detailed email about his going-ons over the last year. Congrats to him, he has his second child on the way… this one, a boy! Due in January. Wonder if he planted the seed the same day I did… heh. At least, I hope it was my seed which was planted (and for his sake, his too!)

* My uncle Ron had a heart attack last week; had a stint put in and went home the next day or maybe 2 days after. I hear he is doing well. He’s supposed to fly to Casper from Phoenix for the weekend for Shelli’s folks wedding anniversary (#60 I think) but won’t find out until tomorrow if he get’s to go. I’m just thankful he’s ok. He had the attack at the hospital, thankfully. SHelli took him as he was having pains. What a blessing he was there, with doctors, when it happened.

* I learned of Ron’s scheduled trip to Casper and his doctor appointment from my Grandma, who called me tonight to check in on us all. It is always great to talk to her; she sounded good tonight. She is a special lady. She misses driving (she tells me that every time I talk to her). I can only imagine what it is like to lose the freedom to go where you want, when you want. Part of the cycle of life, I told her. She is excited for our little one, and that we are venturing to Casper for Thanksgiving (Spencer, Rebecca and I in the hummer…. with Hoover). Yes, Hoover will be taking his first road trip, provided I can keep him at my sister’s house or something. Waiting for an invite from mom or Stephanie… someone please!

* Hoover turns 2 on October 4. My puppy is becoming a man! And he is getting thicker. We went for a short run the other night; he beat me. But tonight, he wouldn’t jump in the H2 to go to the Murphys. So, he stayed home.

* Rebecca had a parenting class for teenagers through her friends church. Came home, and her and Spencer started arguing. What a great class! Thankfully, I think it’s free.

* Speaking of Spencer… he just requested my assistance with home work. Social Studies. Great. Please don’t tell him I sucked at that…. burn my old report cards!

*

Buh bye for now; class is in session.

A Few Points About London … And Aliens

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Ok, so I spent a whopping 12 hours in London on my way back from Sophia. Here are a few random ramblings about London.

* 56 GBP will get you a cab ride from the Heathrow Airport to the Sheraton Park Tower hotel.

* 56 GBP is the equivalent of $122.08 USD, at least as of the day I arrived in London. By now, probably more as our dollar value continues its decline.

* For four people and a lot of luggage, it takes 165 GBP to get from the Sheraton to Gatwick Airport.

* That’s $359.70 for an airport ride.

* Cabs in London are freaking cool! The old-time style, but they fit a lot of people.

* A 12 oz filet (steak) in London is quite bigger than a 12 oz filet in the United States. Perhaps our units of measuring have been declining with the dollar.

* A 12 oz filet (steak) in London looks not like a filet in the United States, but more like a cow pattie or a huge hamburger. Depends on if you’re from Wyoming or not.

* People pay an awful lot of money in London. At least, it seems so while the US dollar is so low.

* It is nice, in London, that people speak English. After 7 days in Italy and Bulgaria, that was welcomed. And, I love the accent and their choice of words.

* Driving on the left hand side of the road is, well, scarry.

* The scenery on the way to and from the airport is, well, rather plain. Not so much good for picture taking.

* London is an almost 10 hour flight to Dallas Houston. And, what sucks is you dang near fly over Kansas City. But they don’t let you off.

* Anyone know what a wanker is?

* Ok, so I didn’t get to spend too much time in London, but it was nice. However, I choose to wait until the dollar is stronger before I visit again. I spent more in London in 12 hours than I did in Rome in 4 days (excluding, of course, hotels and what not). General spending money, I mean. As in for cabs.

Now, on to aliens. I’m not sure who the hell Rebecca has been sleeping with, but if you go to my gallery you can see some additional sonogram/ultrasound/whatever you call it pictures. And there are a few alien pictures… or what they call 3D ultrasounds. Greg Pabst, a friend and co-worker, has for years had 3D pictures of his two children (unborn at the time!) on his desk, and they kinda make me sick. Well, I thought it might be a different feeling when it’s my own child. I thought wrong. It’s not “cute” as Rebecca calls it. If I saw it on the big screen I would close my eyes and shiver. Which is what I did when I scanned it.

Oh well, baby is healthy it seems. Mother is doing well.

Peace… for now.

Bulgaria and Sofia Office Pictures

Friday, September 14th, 2007

While I am too tired to write much, I did upload some pictures of Bulgaria (under Travel) and of the Aplus.Net Sofia Office (under Aplus) in the gallery.

I’m alive and well… tired, and hungry for some red meat. I will be heading to the hotel here in a few moments, get a night sleep and spend a few more hours in the office tomorrow. I leave at 1pm for the airport to catch a 2:35 pm flight to Heathrow, where I will rejoin with Gabe, Stephanie and Debbie. Stay one night in Hethrow then off to Houston and Kansas City on Sunday. Get back to KC I think at 6:30 or 8:30 on Sunday night… too tired to remember or look it up right now.

Sorry I missed Spencer’s first football game… he scored two touchdowns. Probably makes him like offense better than defense, which he used to play. His team lost, but sounds like he did well and Rebecca says he’s excited.

I wonder if Hoover will remember me….

That’s all for now.

Back In Bulgaria

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

This one will be short, but I am here in Bulgaria. Currently at the office; it’s 11:05 am in KC and 7:05 pm here in Sofia. I’m tired; only got 2 hours of sleep last night and we had an early flight this morning (6:40am) to Milan, followed by the flight here.

Lot’s to catch up on; things I failed to mention but are mention-worthy. I will try and make some time this evening or tomorrow to do such.

Right now, just trying to figure out where Gabe is… he hasn’t showed up at the office and we have no way to contact him. Wonderful!

Are You Ready For Some Tuesday Morning Football?

Monday, September 10th, 2007

It’s 1:05 am here on Tuesday morning in Rome. I’m only slightly tired, but we intend to sleep in today as on Wednesday we have a 6:00 am flight to Bulgaria. So, I turn on the TV and guess what? It’s Monday Night Football. Cincy vs Balt. North American Sports Network. You can’t beat that. Wish we had figured this out on Sunday so we could have watched the Broncos with their last second victory and the Chiefs with their arse getting whopped. It’s arse since I’m in Rome and spent the day at the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel.

So the day started without breakfast, and a little late start. About 11:00 am here. We took a rather lengthy walk to the Terminale, where we boarded a red double decker, no roof on top tour bus. The bus was to make 11 stops throughout Rome. So, we took some pictures, listened to the headphones provided and heard a little history of this fine place called Rome. We stayed in until the Vatican stop, where we got off and took some pictures. We did not go in the Vatican… long line, and none of us are Catholic. We would have failed the signal test to get in. I would have probably put a hit and run sign on and ended up going to hell for it. Anyway, instead of going into the Vatican, we let our tour guide lead the way to the Sistine Chapel. Yes, Debbie knew the way. We joined a rather long line. How long it was, we wouldn’t know for quite some time. Some rather “nice” lady offered to let us join her tour party up front for 25 EURO each, not counting the 13 EURO admission fee. We felt that was a bit steep, so we waited it out in line. Which wrapped around two corners. We were in the line for a long time. A really long long time. As we finally got close, we found that same fine lady just pushing people into line; yes, the lady was profitting off helping people cut in line. We did not let them in front of us. If I hadn’t been worried about going to hell, I may have said something. But, I just held my arms out and forbid them from passing. It worked. But hundreds behind us got the shaft, much like a lot of altar boys in the US. Ok, yep, I will probably rot for that one.

One Week From Now…

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

I will be in Maui. Where will you be?

Rebecca and I will be leaving on Saturday for our rescheduled trip to Maui with Gabe & Stephanie Murphy. We’re all really anxious to get over there and spend a week relaxing and unwinding from the hectic times we all have been going through. Let’s see… since our last trip to Maui some 15 months ago, here’s what has happened:

* Hoover Woodrow joined the family (January)
* Sold my old house (March, closed in June)
* Rebecca and I got married (June)
* Rebecca, Spencer and I moved into our new house (June)
* I went to Sofia, Bulgaria (June)
* Rebecca and I went to St. Lucia for our honeymoon (June-July)
* I became the COO of Aplus.Net, based in San Diego and spent 7 months commuting from KC to San Diego (July – February)
* We’re looking at buying another company to integrate with Aplus.Net (current)

I suppose the list could get more detailed, but that summarizes the biggest points.

We hosted an Aplus.Net bar-b-que here yesterday. Guests started arriving at 5:15 or so and I think Russ Gilman, the last to leave, departed somewhere between 1:00 to 2:00 am. I don’t really know… we had a few (ok, more than a few) shots of Patrone which was tasting mighty smooth. The good news is I woke up fine… not hanging at all. Was a great time… a lot of Aplus-ers and ther families came over and everyone got to know each other much better. Nothing crazy happened, so that’s good, but I’m sure some stories might circulate at the office tomorrow.

Speaking of the office tomorrow, I have to be there by 7am, so I might haul my hiney into bed.

That’s all for now. Oh, get over to the gallery and click into the Aplus.Net section and you can see some pics of the folks at the BBQ yesterday.

Buh bye for now…

So What’s New?

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

Well, Payton isn’t a Dan, nor a Joe. At least for the latter, there is always next year. Or maybe he will attempt to be a Ben and crash a motorcycle. Man, I’m starting to sound cruel here. Oh well. Dad, the check is in the mail, so to speak.

Rebecca and Spencer visited me in San Diego the last weekend I was there. Uploaded a bunch of pics of it. You can find it in the gallery (note the new location: http://www.ryanelledge.com/gallery2). Go to Places and then San Diego, then Vacation.

We opened the new corporate headquarters for A+ in Overland Park last Monday. Good news… I won’t be travelling as much now. Sorry Rebecca, I get my side of the bed again. Some pics of the new office, still under construction but open for business, can be found in the A+ section of my gallery.

Pitchers and Catchers report this week. Baseball fever is in the air. It’s cold here… I don’t feel it yet!

Getting excited to head to the Dave Matthews Band shows in Las Vegas the week of my birthday. Two nights at the MGM. I hear the Fray is opening for them. That’s good cuz I like the Fray. March Madness will be going on at the same time, so it should be a great time in Vegas.

Rebecca is off to somewhere this coming weekend with Stephanie Murphy… some fun with Lauren’s cheerleading. Leaves me to the house and dogs for a few days–Specner is with the big S.D. (e-mail me if you don’t know what that stands for). Guess what that means, folks! Yep, you guessed it. POKER TOURNAMENT AT THE ELLEDGE CASA ON FRIDAY! It’s probably going to be the biggest yet, since a bunch of the new A+ers from San Diego want to give me some of their hard earned money! Just kidding, folks… we only play for fun money.

Got an XBOX 360 last week. Don’t know why, but there was a game I wanted to play. . Game’s called Dead Rising. Killing zombies. Also got Rainbow 6 Vegas — that game rocks. Problem is, I will play XBOX 360 about two weeks and then it will be forgotten as with every other game console I have bought.

Oh, yeah… you are looking at my new site design. Thanks XOOPS for the pretty cool CMS (Content Management System). I like the feel and operation of the site better. Will be adding more to it as I have time.

Well, I am out of rambling for now. Till next time.

Everything Happens for a Reason

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

Sophie, the sometimes extremely evil dog, turned 6 today. She celebrated with a dog birthday cake from Land of Paws. Hoover enjoyed some of her cake as well. Pictures of both are available in the Photo Album.

Speaking of Hoover… I am trying to teach him to hug. This simply means sitting, followed by putting both his paws on my shoulders. Major problem with this… Hoover gets so excited at the prospect of getting his training reward (raw hotdogs) that he damn near tackles me. This is only day two of the training on this new “trick”. I’m sure my blackeye will go away in time.

Work…work…work. Seems like all I do anymore, but I love it. It’s crazy times right now, trying to move a company from San Diego to Overland Park Kansas. New hurdles and obstacles come my way daily. We’re a little behind schedule but contingency plans are being worked on. Regardless, my days of living in a corporate apartment in Sunny Dan Diego are coming close to an end. Sad part is there are quite a few people we really wanted to make the move from San Diego to the KC area to remain with the company, but they have choosen not to. Sucks really. Great people… hard to see them go. Everything happens for a reason, though, and I’m sure everyone will be better off in the long run.

I miss baseball. Wish I was working on getting schedules done, meeting with players, getting everything ready to go. My competitive spirit definitely has not diminished. I need an umpire to argue with. I need more political sull bhit to deal with. Oh wait, maybe I don’t miss it as much as I though. But, I do. Everything happens for a reason. I’m sure I will be better off in the long run???!!?

Mom and Dad are on a Hawaiian cruise right now. I should still be in Maui. Rebecca and I were supposed to be there now with Gabe and Stephanie. We should have met up with my parents while we were out there. Dad skipped an annual convention to coordinate the vacation while Rebecca and I would be in Maui. They went. We didn’t. Everything happens for a reason. I’m sure I will be better off in the long run….. Sorry ma and pa…. I will make it up to you, I promise.

So growing up, my best friend Shawn got remarried awhile back and now has a kid. Haven’t seen or talked to him in a long time. Haven’t seen the kiddo. Everything happens for a reason. You know what’s next.

ALERT: Ice Storm is a coming. Should arrive over night. Can’t wait…. to fly back to San Diego on Monday.

Hoover and I took a “walk” a little while ago. He and I are both dragging arse right now… because somewhere along the line Rebecca taught him to run instead of walk. He doesn’t realize how out of shape I am anymore. I think I am alergic to activity.

Need to get my cholesterol checked. Less than 2 months ago, it was 256. That’s not good… but everything happens for a reason, ya know. Trying to eat a bit healthier… tough to do when you don’t like anything without red meat in it. Tried lobster, though. First piece of seafood I have eaten in a dozen or more years… last time was shrimp at the Reinhart’s house in Casper… I doused it with ranch dressing. Still sucked.

Uh oh, Hoover has gas and he’s lying beside my desk as I ramble.

I wonder what Geno, Wharton, Callanan, Kelly, Shotty and the rest of the baseball gang are up to. Sometime I will find out.

Matty Snyder had a baby girl. Poor girl. J/k. I wonder what Matty is up to? Haven’t seen him or really heard from him since I got married in June. Great “kid” he is. Now my mind is wondering… wonder what Prentice is up to? Gansta BHill emailed me the other day… I still have it marked as unread so I will remember to email him back. Im such a slacker.

Aside from coaching, I miss reffin high school and college basketball. Havent done that since 1999. Wonder if I would even remember how. Well, sometimes I still work on the signals. Yeah, I would still be good at that. Did I say good? Hmm, maybe we should ask Coach Nolan if I was good. Course then I would have to ask him what his record is as the KW basketball coach. Can’t believe they resorted to him. Oh well, everything happens for a reason… right?

Ok, I’m tired of rambling. Time to get back to e-mails. Reading resumes. Oh, do you need a job???? Let me know!

Happy New Year. Buh bye for now.

Greetings from Sofia, Bulgaria

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006

Well, it’s 4:22 am here, which equates to about 8:22 pm in Kansas City, though I am more accustomed to the 6:22 pm it is in San Diego. For exactly 10 full weeks now… er, make that 11 I think, I have been basically on the road. Away from my wife. Away from my stepson. Away from my Hoover. Away from the Murphy clan. It’s been difficult, but we manage.

Right now I am in Sofia, Bulgaria. Small little country about 2/3 the size of Los Angeles I am told. I think about a million people here in Sofia. Our company has an office here of 200-some people, and I am over meeting them all and learning from them how we can improve the operations. Very enlightening trip.

The beds here suck. I told Rebecca the other day I will never complain about our mattress which my back hates. The “beds” out here are as hard as a rock. Even in a 5 star hotel. Not that I’m in a 5 star hotel, nor am I sure there is one here, but nonetheless, they are hard. I probably unintentionally lied to Rebecca, as I probably will complain about the hardness of our bed, but right now, I would love to be sleeping in it. Oh well, she has graciously scheduled me for an 80 minute massage on Sunday. I can’t wait. Though it is Wednesday, I eseentially have to wait 5 days, not 4, for that massage. Crazy how timezones work….

Well, my insomnia tonight for somereason made me talk to myself on here since I don’t think anyone else would ever read my rambling. Oh wait, hi mom! How are ya? Miss you, too!

Well, that’s truly enough rambling for now. peace.

Oh, yikes. Today is Hoover’s ONE YEAR BIRTHDAY! On Friday we’ll celebrate… a nice doggie cake. Can’t wait to see him. Hopefully he’ll remember me… and won’t eat any chairs between now and then!

Peace. Again.
